Foreign Ministry Launches Pilot Project to Provide Weekend Consular Services for Overseas Sri Lankans

Under the guidance of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, a pilot project has been launched to provide consular services to overseas Sri Lankans on one designated weekend day every month.

This initiative forms part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance access to consular services for Sri Lankan migrant workers and communities abroad. By offering services outside regular working days, the project aims to assist Sri Lankans who face difficulties in visiting Sri Lanka Embassies and Consulates during the week and within normal office hours due to work and other commitments.

At the initial phase of implementation, the pilot programme is being implemented through the Sri Lanka Embassies and Consulates General in South Korea (Seoul), Maldives (Malé), Saudi Arabia (Riyadh and Jeddah), Italy (Rome and Milan), Kuwait, Oman (Muscat), Jordan (Amman), and Israel (Tel Aviv).

Following an assessment of the pilot phase, the Ministry intends to expand the initiative in phases to other Sri Lanka Embassies and Consulates, while also considering an increase in the number of weekend service days where feasible.

The respective Embassies and Consulates will announce the specific dates and times identified for the weekend consular services. Sri Lankans residing in these countries are advised to refer to the official websites and social media platforms of the relevant Embassies and Consulates for updated information.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism remains committed to further strengthening service delivery and ensuring more responsive and accessible consular assistance to Sri Lankans overseas.
